The German federal government has narrowly missed its legally mandated target of 50% women in leadership positions in public service by the deadline of December 31, 2025, with the share standing at 47%, the German Family Ministry said on Monday.

"The 47% is a clear sign of progress towards equality," said Federal Family and Women's Minister Karin Prien. "But our commitment has no expiry date. The goal remains equal participation by women and men," she added.

The requirement to achieve parity in the filling of leadership positions in federal authorities by the end of 2025 was enshrined in the Federal Gender Equality Act in 2021.

Equal participation means "that the filling of leadership positions in the federal public service, viewed across the various management levels, should aim for approximate numerical equality," according to the ministry.
