Police in Berlin were on Friday counting on forensic evidence from fingerprints or DNA to lead them to whoever secretly installed cameras in the women's toilets at a municipal university.

Velcro mounts for other cameras were also found in toilets in nearby premises of the administration of the German capital's eastern Lichtenberg district.

According to a police spokesman, officers were called to the Berlin School of Economics and Law earlier after students found a camera. A second device was found during a search of the publicly accessible toilets at the Alt-Friedrichsfelde campus.

Authorities are investigating on suspicion of invasion of privacy. The RBB broadcaster reported that the cameras were attached beneath sanitary disposal bag dispensers.

According to RBB, they were unable to transmit images in real time and would have had to be removed to access recordings.

The Lichtenberg authorities also said they found touch fasteners for attaching cameras in toilets in properties used by the district office.

"I am stunned and can only strongly condemn this heinous act. The perpetrator or perpetrators have acted in a despicable manner and are liable to prosecution," said Lichtenberg Mayor Martin Schaefer.
