PADIBERAS Nasional Bhd (Bernas) has announced a nationwide price alignment for imported white rice (BPI), effective today, setting the price at RM2,600 per metric tonne at all its warehouse gates in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
In a statement, Bernas said that government subsidies on BPI for Sabah and Sarawak will continue as usual, ensuring continued affordability in those regions.
“This proactive measure reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the government’s efforts to ensure food supply security and to ease the impact of rising global market prices,” Bernama cited the statement saying.
“This directly allows consumers to access imported rice at a more affordable price, helping to reduce the cost of living.”
This marks the second price adjustment in recent months, following the reduction of BPI prices from RM3,000 to RM2,800 per metric tonne in Peninsular Malaysia on 1 December 2024.
With the latest revision, Malaysia continues to offer the lowest price for imported white rice across Southeast Asia, BERNAS added.
The agency also assured the public that national rice supplies remain sufficient, supported by a diversified import strategy sourcing rice from Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar.
“This approach ensures the continuity of national supply without over-reliance on a single source, while also safeguarding the country’s buffer stock,” Bernas said.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu confirmed the adjustment on Wednesday, stating it was the result of engagement sessions with BERNAS and consideration of various factors including global market trends and the need to maintain a resilient food supply chain.
