Bernie Sanders, a long-serving US senator from Vermont known for his national political campaigns, drew attention for a different reason last weekend.
He posted a video on X showing himself making shots at a local basketball court. The clip was recorded in Minnesota ahead of a public appearance.
Sanders captioned the post: “Warming up in a local Minnesota park for the rally with Peggy Flanagan.” The footage quickly spread, drawing reactions far beyond the political sphere.
Fans flooded social media with jokes about Bernie Sanders’ basketball skills

The video sparked a wave of humorous and supportive comments about Sanders’ shooting form. Many fans were quick to compare his performance with professional players.
“Please quit politics and join the Orlando Magic before Game 7,” one user wrote. Another added, “Better jumper than Derrick White.”
Creative responses also emerged. “The bonus footage you might have missed,” one fan posted, alongside an AI-generated video of Sanders dunking.
Others focused on his age and composure. “In penny loafers, slacks and a sweater, Bernie is still better than me at basketball. I’m impressed,” one comment read, while another said, “Nice form Mr. Sanders! Would make George Mikan proud.”
Criticism also emerges despite overall praise
Not all responses were positive, with some users offering criticism, as a few comments reflected political divides rather than the basketball clip itself.
“Basketball is a capitalist game. He should sit this one out,” one user wrote.
Another questioned: “Bernie is never in his own state why is that?”
“Not bad for an old fart. But you still suck!” added a third critic.
Despite that, such responses were in the minority. The dominant tone remained one of amusement and admiration for Sanders’ energy, citing him as an example for the elderly.
