Malaysia’s newest political movement, Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama), appears to be attracting a significant number of voters who have never before aligned themselves with any political party, suggesting a growing desire for fresh political options beyond the country’s established political blocs.
Former Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad revealed that nearly half of Bersama’s first 20,000 members - approximately 46 per cent - were politically unaffiliated before joining the party. The figure makes first-time political participants the largest segment of Bersama’s early membership base and could signal increasing voter dissatisfaction with traditional political parties.
The disclosure marks the first detailed look at Bersama’s membership composition since Nik Nazmi and former Pandan MP Dato' Seri Rafizi Ramli assumed leadership of the previously dormant party earlier this month.
According to the breakdown, former members of PKR make up the second-largest group within Bersama, accounting for 29 per cent of total membership. The remaining members come from a broad spectrum of political backgrounds, spanning both government and opposition parties.
Former Umno members represent 6.3 per cent of Bersama’s membership, while PAS members account for 5.2 per cent. Amanah and Bersatu each contribute 2.5 per cent, followed by Muda at 2.2 per cent and DAP at 1.3 per cent.
The figures indicate that Bersama is not merely drawing support from one political camp but is attracting members from across Malaysia’s ideological and partisan landscape. Collectively, members originating from Umno, PAS, Bersatu and Amanah - four major Malay-majority parties - constitute around 15 per cent of the party’s current membership.
In terms of ethnic composition, Bersama presently consists of 62 per cent Malays, 16 per cent Indians and 15 per cent Chinese, reflecting a relatively diverse membership profile at its early stage.
Nik Nazmi interpreted the strong participation from previously unaffiliated voters as evidence that many Malaysians are actively searching for a political alternative outside the existing political framework.
The revelation may strengthen Bersama’s claim that it is attempting to occupy a political space increasingly sought by voters who feel disconnected from both the government and opposition coalitions.
Perhaps more intriguing was Nik Nazmi’s disclosure that several sitting Members of Parliament from both sides of the political divide have expressed interest in joining Bersama. He indicated that the number exceeds the five PKR MPs who have been the subject of public speculation in recent weeks.
However, the party leadership appears cautious about triggering political instability.
According to Nik Nazmi, Bersama has advised interested lawmakers to hold off on making any immediate moves, citing concerns over broader political considerations, including the stability of the current federal government.
The remarks suggest that while Bersama may be positioning itself as a long-term political force, its leaders are aware of the delicate balance of power in Parliament and the potential consequences of rapid defections.
Rafizi and Nik Nazmi formally took control of Bersama on May 17, 2026 before resigning from Parliament the following day, marking a dramatic political reset for both leaders.
As Bersama continues to expand, the composition of its early membership offers an interesting glimpse into a segment of the electorate seeking new political representation.
Whether the party can transform this initial enthusiasm into a sustainable national movement remains to be seen, but its first 20,000 members indicate that Malaysia’s political landscape may still have room for a fresh contender.
