Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has been suspended from Bersama activities until Jan 19, 2027, after being detained by JAIS over a suspected khalwat offence.
PETALING JAYA: Bersama has suspended Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from all official party activities for three months, from Oct 20 to Jan 19, 2027, following his admission regarding an alleged case that recently went viral.
In a statement today, party president Syukri Razab said Bersama viewed the development seriously and maintained that issues involving its leadership and members must be addressed appropriately to safeguard its integrity, credibility and public confidence.
He said the decision was necessary and reasonable, while acknowledging Nik Nazmi’s contributions and commitment to the party since its relaunch in May 2026.
“We take this development seriously and maintain that every issue involving the party’s leadership and members must be addressed appropriately to safeguard the party’s integrity, credibility and public confidence.
“We believe this decision is necessary and reasonable, without diminishing Nik Nazmi’s contributions and commitment to Bersama’s cause since the party was relaunched in May 2026,” he said.
Nik Nazmi, who leads Bersama, earlier confirmed that he was among two individuals detained by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) in Petaling Jaya on Oct 15 over a suspected khalwat offence.
He said the meeting initially involved several friends at a studio in Brickfields before he and a woman continued their discussion in Petaling Jaya to review project-related materials.
Nik Nazmi acknowledged that only he and the woman were present when JAIS officers arrived. He admitted that his decision was a mistake but maintained that they had not engaged in any improper conduct.
He also apologised to his wife, family, and Bersama members and supporters, adding that he would cooperate with any legal proceedings and accept whatever decision the party made.
JAIS said the two individuals were detained to assist investigations under Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.
The provision carries a maximum fine of RM3,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.
