Understanding the Situation: Bersatu is planning to lodge reports with the police and the MACC regarding four of its MPs who pledged their support for the government.
Party president Muhyiddin Yassin claims that these MPs were either threatened or offered development allocations in exchange for their support. Muhyiddin believes that these actions violate the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act. He intends to file the reports within a day or two after an emergency meeting.
According to Muhyiddin, Jeli MP Zahari Kechik, Gua Musang MP Azizi Abu Naim, Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman, and Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid announced their support for Anwar Ibrahim's government, stating it was in the best interest of their constituents.
However, Suhaili and Iskandar Dzulkarnain have already been suspended from Bersatu for six and four years, respectively. Muhyiddin claims that Azizi informed the party of the offers, although Azizi himself stated that he had rejected them. Nonetheless, Azizi later declared his support for the unity government, raising suspicion that there may have been a violation of the MACC Act.
Muhyiddin asserted that Iskandar Dzulkarnain faced threats from a tycoon, who claimed that the MACC would take action against him if he did not support the government. In addition, he highlighted the need to review the anti-hopping bill that was passed the previous year, as it had flaws requiring rectification. This bill states that MPs will lose their seats if they switch parties, except in cases where they are expelled by their party or their party is dissolved or deregistered.
Muhyiddin expressed doubt regarding the statement made by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul, who claimed that the four MPs did not violate the anti-party-hopping law. Muhyiddin suggested that the Speaker's affiliation with PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) might have influenced his statement. He emphasized that the Speaker is expected to be impartial, regardless of party affiliation.
Overall, Bersatu intends to proceed with lodging reports to the police and MACC regarding the alleged misconduct of the four MPs. They believe that the MPs were either coerced or enticed with development allocations, resulting in a potential violation of the MACC Act. Muhyiddin also raised concerns regarding the anti-hopping bill and questioned the impartiality of the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
