In a dramatic turn of events, Bersatu MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan has come forward with startling claims of being offered bribes to support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the prime minister. These alleged incidents, he stated, occurred through several encounters with unidentified individuals who promised significant allocations for his constituency in return for his backing of Anwar.

During a debate on the motion of thanks on the Royal Address, Wan Saiful disclosed that he had been contacted by phone and approached in person by these individuals, who allegedly offered him an allocation of RM1.7 million for his constituency. He further claimed that these individuals were aware of his personal struggles, particularly his wife's battle with cancer, and attempted to exploit this situation by offering government project allocations that could also benefit his associates.

Wan Saiful recounted the first meeting, which took place on January 17, 2024, at the Westin Hotel in Bukit Bintang. Subsequently, another meeting was held at the JW Marriott hotel. He revealed that one of the individuals who approached him during these encounters was a friend, whom he chose not to identify.

These alleged bribery attempts, according to Wan Saiful, followed his October 2023 trial on 18 charges of money laundering amounting to RM5.59 million related to the Jana Wibawa project. Despite his refusal to comply with the demands, he claimed that the efforts persisted. On Monday afternoon, he stated that he was approached again for a meeting at Corus Hotel, Jalan Ampang, which he felt compelled to attend due to the perceived power of these individuals and his fear of potential repercussions.

Following Wan Saiful's revelations, calls have been made for him to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate these allegations. However, government backbenchers have dismissed his claims as malicious accusations. RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) urged Wan Saiful to take action if the accusations were genuine.

Despite the gravity of the allegations, Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul considered Wan Saiful's claims as hearsay and directed him to conclude his debate to allow the proceedings to continue.

The explosive nature of Wan Saiful's claims has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, raising questions about the integrity of the political process and the lengths to which some may go to secure power. As the nation awaits further developments, Wan Saiful's courage in coming forward with these allegations underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in governance.
