Perikatan Nasional (PN) will be fielding a candidate from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) for the Nenggiri state by-election scheduled on August 17. According to Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, this decision was pre-determined as Nenggiri is traditionally a Bersatu-held seat.

Muhyiddin announced that preparations have already begun, with initial mobilization of their election machinery. The next steps will involve selecting the most suitable candidate from Bersatu. He shared this information during a tea session with the local community at Taman Puteri Gunong in Simpang Ampat earlier today (June 28). Also attending the event was Abidin Ismail, the PN candidate for the Sungai Bakap by-election.

The Election Commission (EC) has outlined the schedule for the Nenggiri by-election, with polling day set for August 17. Nominations and early voting are slated for August 3 and August 13 respectively.

The Nenggiri seat became vacant following the announcement by Kelantan State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah on June 19. This vacancy followed the submission of a written notice in accordance with Clause (3) of Article 31A of the Kelantan Constitution by the former Nenggiri state assemblyman Mohd Azizi Abu Naim on June 13.

In a related development, former Jeli MP and Bersatu leader Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed reaffirmed his decision to retire from active politics. Muhyiddin expressed the party's respect for Mustapa's choice, acknowledging his long service and contributions. Mustapa had previously announced his resignation from all positions within Bersatu on September 30, 2023, and decided not to contest in the 15th general election, marking his formal exit from political life.

With the Nenggiri by-election approaching, Bersatu is focused on maintaining its hold on the seat, aiming to leverage its established presence and machinery. The upcoming election will test the party's organizational strength and candidate appeal in the constituency.

This by-election is not just a political event but also an opportunity for the local community to engage with their potential representatives, scrutinize their platforms, and make informed decisions about their future leadership. The process reflects the dynamic and participatory nature of Malaysia's democratic system, where voters play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape.

As the date draws near, all eyes will be on Bersatu's campaign strategies and the eventual selection of their candidate, setting the stage for a significant electoral contest in Nenggiri.
