KUALA LUMPUR – Cracks within Perikatan Nasional appear to be widening after PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang openly questioned the coalition’s internal dynamics, triggering a measured response from Bersatu as speculation grows over the future of the opposition pact ahead of GE16.
The development follows Hadi’s indication that PAS is reassessing its political cooperation with Bersatu, including the direction and structure of the partnership heading into the next general election.
While stopping short of declaring a split, Hadi suggested PAS could chart its own course should both parties fail to reach common ground. He said the review was based on lessons and experiences from previous elections, while cautioning that PAS’ willingness to remain patient had its limits.
The PAS president also expressed frustration over what he described as unilateral decisions by Bersatu and claimed PAS grassroots machinery had shouldered a significant share of campaign responsibilities during past elections.
According to Hadi, the concerns were not new and had already been formally communicated through internal party channels, including a letter submitted to Bersatu earlier this month.
In a media statement today, Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said the party viewed Hadi’s remarks seriously and would examine the issues comprehensively.
“Bersatu is of the view that every issue raised should be examined comprehensively in the spirit of camaraderie, mutual understanding and shared responsibility to further strengthen unity within PN,” he said.
Tun Faisal said Bersatu would review every matter raised and deliberate on them during upcoming meetings involving the party’s Political Bureau and Supreme Leadership Council.
“Accordingly, Bersatu will review all matters raised and discuss them in depth during upcoming meetings of the Bersatu Political Bureau and Supreme Leadership Council in the near future,” he added.
The measured response signals Bersatu’s preference to manage the issue internally, even as Hadi’s remarks fuel fresh questions over coalition dynamics and electoral strategy within PN ahead of GE16. - May 22, 2026
