Bersih appeals for RM60,000 to fund election monitoring activities

KUALA LUMPUR – Electoral watchdog Bersih is appealing for RM60,000 worth of donations from the public to conduct its activities during the upcoming polls in six states. The group’s steering committee said that the funds are needed for electoral monitoring activities, including mobilising and training 89 election observers as well as establishing a call centre for inquiries regarding election matters.

It also intends to launch a public campaign to increase voter turnout, and also a website to receive public complaints on election offences.

“Our estimated budget to run all these programmes and campaigns is RM60,000 and we need your help.

“While most of our volunteers are not expecting any remuneration, we will nonetheless provide them a stipend to cover food and travel expenses,” Bersih said in a statement.

Every ringgit donated will be accounted for, and a report on the funds’ usage will be publicly shared after the elections, Bersih added.

Those who are interested in donating can channel their donations to Bersih & Adil Network Bhd at the Maybank account number 512295102931 with the reference “6PRN”.

Six states – Penang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu – will be holding simultaneous elections on August 12.

Candidate nomination will be on July 29 while early voting has been set for August 8. – The Vibes, July 11, 2023
