Best Buy opens ‘mini location’ as it turns to new store format to boost sales

  • Best Buy is opening smaller format stores in communities that are interested in the electronics retailer but cannot support larger, traditional locations.
  • These new mini locations are substantially smaller, typically ranging from 12,000 to 15,000 square feet, compared to the company's larger stores which can exceed 40,000 square feet.
  • One of these smaller stores opened this week in Jonesboro, Arkansas, with another 28,000-square-foot store also opening in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, as part of the tailored size strategy.
  • Incoming CEO Jason Bonfig explained that this approach allows Best Buy to enter markets where customer demand is real and growing, providing flexibility to serve underserved areas and dense urban neighborhoods.
  • This expansion strategy comes as Best Buy's stock has seen a decline over the past five years, although the company reported better-than-expected sales with a two percent increase in the first quarter of the fiscal year.
