Netflix’s high-stakes teen dramedy Bet flips the script on prep school prestige by introducing a gambling angle. Inspired by Homura Kawamoto’s hit manga Kakegurui, Bet reimagines the twisted thrill of compulsive gambling through an American lens. Created by Warrior Nun’s Simon Barry, the 10-episode series premiered globally on Netflix on 15 May 2025.

The show centres on Yumeko Kawamoto (Miku Martineau), a cunning transfer student with a glittering smile and a shadowy motive. She enrols at St. Dominic’s Prep, an elite school where the curriculum revolves not around books, but bets. Here, the social hierarchy is defined by games of chance and deception, where the losers—dubbed “house pets”—are shackled by debt and servitude.

Yumeko’s arrival throws the student council, led by cold-blooded queen bee Kira (Clara Alexandrova) and her enigmatic sister Riri (Anwen O’Driscoll), into chaos. As she ascends the ranks by outwitting her rivals, Yumeko forges unlikely alliances with classmate Ryan (Ayo Solanke), pacifist Michael (Hunter Cardinal), and fallen council member Mary (Eve Edwards).

Spoilers ahead!

A recap of Bet

Bet kicks off with Yumeko Kawamoto, expelled from a regular American high school, entering the lion’s den—St. Dominic’s Prep—a ruthless elite school where wealth dictates entry, but power is won through high-stakes games. Here, social hierarchy isn’t just about status; it’s a deadly game of survival, where losers are condemned to a life of servitude as “house pets.” Yumeko’s arrival shakes the rigid order. Unlike others, she’s not here to blend in—she’s got a secret mission fueled by vengeance for her parents’ tragic death.

Right away, Yumeko catches the wary eye of Ryan, a house pet under the iron fist of Mary Davis, a student council member. Though resigned to his fate, Ryan warns Yumeko to steer clear of the council—an elite circle of the top ten players who rule the school with merciless authority, led by the formidable student council president, Kira. Kira’s reign is absolute, her ambition fueled by the desperate need for her father’s approval as school representative, a recognition he coldly denies her.

Unfazed by warnings, Yumeko deliberately challenges the system, quickly upending expectations by defeating Mary in a high-stakes card game. The victory flips power dynamics on their heads, turning Mary into Ryan’s house pet and shaking the council’s grip. Yumeko’s defiance spreads like wildfire, positioning her as both a disruptor and a beacon for those oppressed under the council’s tyranny. Her charm and sheer audacity win over unlikely allies: Ryan, a downtrodden house pet infatuated with her; Michael, who avoids trouble by steering clear of the council; and Mary, once a council member herself, now demoted to servitude after Yumeko humiliates her in a daring card game.

Yet the most surprising twist is the unlikely alliance forged between Yumeko and Kira. Once bitter rivals battling to dominate the school’s hierarchy, they find common ground in their shared enemy—the cruel, vindictive parents controlling their fates. In a rare moment of vulnerability, Yumeko supports Kira in her darkest hour, symbolising a strategic union born from mutual survival rather than friendship.

Who were Yumeko’s parents?

In the final moments of Bet, the mystery of Yumeko’s origins is finally revealed, and it’s more twisted than viewers may have guessed. Yumeko’s parents (Keiko and Jo) were once students at St. Dominic’s themselves, and legendary gamblers of the “Kakegurui club”, who rose to the very top of the social hierarchy, only to allegedly disappear after challenging the founders of the school by developing “Bitcoins.”

Bet ending explained: Who killed Yumeko’s parents? Is her mother still alive?

Towards the end of Bet, Yumeko finally uncovers the twisted truth behind her parents’ deaths. Though the assassin who orchestrated her parents’ car blast was a man named Ray, later revealed to be Michael’s father, the real masterminds were the elite St. Dominic’s school board members.

Yumeko’s parents, once loyal council members, tried to redistribute the club’s dirty money for good, but their ideals made them targets. Now, Yumeko’s thirst for justice runs deeper than personal vengeance. She poisons Ray, only for his dying breath to drop a bombshell: her mother, Keiko, may still be alive. The revelation throws Yumeko’s world into chaos. Her quest for revenge may now become a desperate search for truth—and reunion.

Bet ending explained: Who wins the Yumeko vs Kira battle?

In the cinematic last episode, Yumeko and Kira’s rivalry culminates in a high-stakes game of Blackjack, with their lives and futures hanging in the balance. Both poisoned—Yumeko by her own hand and Kira through a kiss—they must gamble for the antidote, with the added pressure of expulsion looming over the loser. As the game intensifies and the poison takes its toll, Mary, serving as the dealer, unexpectedly wins, saving both girls from death and expulsion.

This life-threatening ordeal fosters an unexpected alliance between Yumeko and Kira. United by a common enemy—the corrupt Kakegurui club and their manipulative parents—they agree to collaborate. Yumeko seeks vengeance for her parents’ murder, while Kira aims to reclaim her position and prove her worth to her father. While neither emerges as the definitive victor in their duel, their newfound alliance suggests that together, they might become unstoppable in their quest for justice and power.

Does Yumeko succeed in her plans, or is there a sequel in the works?

In the finale of Bet, Yumeko achieves a significant milestone in her quest for vengeance by eliminating Ray, the man who orchestrated her parents’ deaths. However, this act unveils a deeper conspiracy involving the school’s board members, suggesting that her mission is far from over. Additionally, the revelation that her mother might still be alive adds another layer of complexity to her journey, potentially shifting her focus from revenge to a search for truth and reunion.

The evolving dynamics, including an unexpected alliance with former rival Kira, hint at a broader battle against systemic corruption within St. Dominic’s. While Yumeko has made significant strides, the open-ended conclusion sets the stage for a potential second season, where unresolved mysteries and new challenges await.
