The betrayal of ideals, once championed by the very individuals, like Anwar Ibrahim, now in power, is a bitter pill for Bersih and Malaysian activists to swallow.
The heavy police presence at Bersih's press conference serves as a stark reminder of the disillusionment that accompanies political ascendancy.
While once the beacon of hope for reform and integrity, Anwar's government now appears to prioritise control over freedom of speech.
The sight of police trucks and officers encircling Bersih's office evokes memories of past struggles against oppression and censorship.
The irony is palpable as former allies now wield the instruments of power to stifle dissent. What was once hailed as the dawn of a new era now feels like a regression into the dark days of authoritarianism.
The government's defence of the police presence as routine fails to assuage concerns, especially given Bersih's history of advocacy for electoral integrity and human rights.
Saifuddin's silence only fuels speculation and undermines trust in the government's commitment to reform.
The metamorphosis from activist to politician is complete, but at what cost?
The ideals of Reformasi seem to have been conveniently cast aside in pursuit of postions and power. The silence of politicians speaks volumes, echoing the sentiment that in politics, principles are often sacrificed at the altar of expediency.
As Malaysians continue to fight for the same ideals that once united them, the question looms large:
Will the promised reforms materialise, or will they remain just elusive dreams?
The future of Bersih and Malaysia hangs in the balance, with the spectre of betrayal casting a long shadow over the path to progress in this country slowly being fragmented by those who once taught us to dream big.
