Betty McGuire death: Broadway and Growing Pains sitcom star dies aged 100

Betty McGuire, the Broadway actor best known for playing Grandmother Kate Malone in the sitcom Growing Pains, has died at the age of 100.

Her death, from natural causes, happened on 8 October at the Motion Picture & Television Fund retirement home in California.

The news was confirmed by her power of attorney, Keith Gerchak, according to Variety.

McGuire's lengthy screen career stretched well beyond Growing Pains, with appearances in iconic shows such as Falcon Crest, The Doris Day Show, Columbo, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Hill Street Blues, ER, CSI: Miami, MacGyver, Moonlighting and Charlie's Angels.

She starred in Growing Pains across a seven-year span, featuring in seasons one to two and four to seven. Her character was the mother of Maggie, played by Joanna Kerns, and even appeared alongside a young Leonardo DiCaprio, who appeared in 23 episodes between 1991 and 1992.

Away from television, she built a prolific stage career, appearing in original Broadway productions of Plain and Fancy, Happy Hunting and Oh, Captain!

Her Broadway co-stars included prestigious names like Ethel Merman, Barbara Cook, Bea Arthur and Tony Randall.

In Las Vegas, she headlined Mame at Caesars Palace. She also toured in productions of Oliver!, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Gypsy.

Her 1970s film roles included playing Sister Mary Quacker in Up in Smoke and a nurse in the medical thriller Coma.

In her later years, McGuire dedicated herself to community work, volunteering as a receptionist for the Coalition for Economic Survival legal clinic in Los Angeles. The organisation assists low-income tenants facing eviction.

During her time at the retirement home, she hosted an in-home talk show titled GabFest.

Rather than featuring celebrity residents, she interviewed members of the care staff about their lives and aspirations.

In 2019, she told NBC Nightly News that the experience made her "a happy camper". She added: "To have the chance to do new things and different things at 92, can you think of anything better? I can’t."
