In another astonishing twist to the ongoing drama involving opposition MPs abruptly declaring support for PM Anwar’s Madani government, Bukit Gantang member of Parliament (MP) Syed Abu Hussin from Bersatu had claimed on Dec 11 that at least another 7 to 8 MPs from Perikatan Nasional (PN) will express their support for PM Anwar soon!
However, at this point of time, he refused to reveal the identity of the MPs involved and whether they were from Pas or Bersatu, saying that some of them had contacted him to express their support for Anwar; he added that there will be an announcement by them in due course.
Meanwhile, Syed Abu Hussin said that he was ready to face any action by Bersatu following the declaration of support for Anwar's leadership; he further claimed that he did not violate the party's rules because its constitution did not prohibit anyone from giving support to any party and that he merely wanted to help the people in his constituency.
Following this latest revelation, and now possibly with several PAS MPs also suspected to be involved, the Islamist party’ spiritual leader Datuk Hashim Jasin has sternly warned its elected representatives not to forget their allegiance to the party or risk expulsion if they express support for PM Anwar Ibrahim.
He was quoted as saying that those who do it will be dismissed from the party and won’t be representing PAS in Parliament; he also warned that they have pledged allegiance in the name of God, hence are not only accountable to the president or the central committee - but are also accountable to God!
Not mincing words, the PAS leader cautioned that: “We will face God to be judged for our actions. Speaking in front of God is formidable because He knows our intentions when we do things.” (Read here)
In fact, Syed Abu Hussin’s latest claim of more impending “defections” appears to have rattled some of the top leaders in Perikatan Nasional with Bersatu information chief Razali Idris quick to dismiss the claim by saying that he is confident that no more MPs from the party will be throwing their support behind PM Anwar’s administration.
Razali went on to tick off the Bukit Gantang MP saying that he doesn’t need to associate others and to be a man to accept his challenge to resign and vacate his Parliamentary seat!
For the record, Syed Abu Hussin became the fifth MP from PN to pledge their support for Anwar’s leadership during the Prime Minister’s Question Time session at Dewan Rakyat last Nov 28.
He has now joined Kuala Kangsar MP Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid, Labuan MP Suhaili Abdul Rahman, Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim and Jeli MP Zahari Kechik in declaring their support for Anwar’s unity government.
Incidentally, the unprecedented spate of cases recently where opposition MPs had openly come out to state their backing for the current government is believed to be a sign of protest against PN's top leaders' failure to discuss and negotiate with the government regarding funds for their constituencies.
