Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, expressed that Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) is not lacking in leaders with the potential to become Prime Minister but it requires continuous renewal.
PKR is a diverse party with a focus on Malay interests and strong support from urban voters. The party forms part of the Unity Coalition Government, relying on alliances with the Malay bloc of UMNO, the non-Malay bloc of DAP, and the Borneo bloc of GPS/GRS to bolster the Unity Coalition Government.
Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim's choice of Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition partners is strategic with PKR as multiracial but focusing on urban Malay interests, DAP in advocacy for non-Malay interests, and AMANAH in focus for rural Malay interests.
Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim's charisma effectively orchestrated the strategic inclusion of UMNO in forming the government, capitalizing on the longstanding alliance between him and Dato' Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the party's President. This pivotal move not only secured UMNO's participation but also prompted other major parties, notably GPS and GRS from Borneo, to align themselves with the unity coalition government. This collaborative effort with UMNO under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition presents a more diverse leadership dynamic compared to the Malay-centric perspective of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, fostering harmony in steering the nation forward.
PKR has only 31 MPs whereas UMNO has 30 MPs, DAP with 40 MPs and AMANAH contributed 8 MPs, GPS/GRS 23 MPs and 6 MPs respectively to make up the unity coalition government.
Anwar Ibrahim, as the Prime Minister's choice, leads the party with a reformist agenda and strategic partnerships with Pakatan Harapan's main partners i.e. DAP and AMANAH.
However, PKR's future leadership beyond Anwar Ibrahim remains uncertain as the transition leaders lack experience. Senior PKR leaders who hold ministerial positions are working to gain the necessary experience to meet the expectations of Malaysians.
Senior PKR leaders who hold ministerial positions like Razifi Ramli (Economy Minister), Saifuddin Nasution (Home Minister), Amirudin Shari (MB Selangor), Amiddunin Harun (MB Negeri Sembilan), Fahmi Fadzil (Communication Minister), Nik Nazmi (Natural Resources Minister), Fadhlina Sidek (Education Minister), and Zaliha Mustafa (FT Minister) have a lot to catch up on to build their experience in meeting the desired competency expectations from the people in order to reach the prime position to lead the country.
Potential candidates like Rafizi Ramli (PKR Deputy President), and Saifuddin Nasution (PKR Secretary General) bring different leadership styles to the table, posing challenges and opportunities for PKR's unity. Razifi Ramli is independent in nature, outspoken in approach and a theory man with oratory skill, more like an opposition style in outlook which may cause conflict with political partners in the unity government. Whereas Saifuddin Nasution is an Anwar Ibrahim loyalist for being who he is for being appointed as Senator to become a Minister because he lost his parliamentary seat in the last general election. He is more of a consultative kind in his style and not a domineering kind of approach which is more acceptable by Anwar Ibrahim in keeping stability and unity within the parties in the unity government.
Nurul Izzah, Anwar Ibrahim's daughter and Vice President of PKR, presents another potential candidate for Prime Minister. However, her untested ministerial performance requires grooming and evaluation.
It is too early to tell who can be the Prime Minister beyond Anwar Ibrahim as current PKR leaders are young and need to build more experience. Furthermore, the dynamics of the Unity Coalition Government mean that the prime ministership may not necessarily remain within PKR. As alliances shift and new power dynamics emerge, other parties with strong influence and parliamentary seats within the unity coalition could also produce viable candidates for the top job.
While Anwar Ibrahim has played a central role in shaping PKR's identity and trajectory, the party's future lies in its ability to nurture leadership beyond him. As PKR navigates leadership transitions, the future of the party and the Unity Coalition Government hinges on building experience, maintaining stability, and fostering unity to lead the nation effectively.
For PKR to remain a formidable force in Malaysian politics, it must be capable of adapting to the ever-changing landscape and effectively representing the interests of its constituents, maintaining their hardcore supporters, pulling support from the Malay voters and acting fairly to all Malaysians irrespective of race or creed.
