BFP gains 16 seats in first BARMM parliamentary polls

THE Bangsamoro Federalist Party (BFP) was allocated 16 seats in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Regional Parliamentary Political Party seats based on the official canvass report of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The report provided by Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia listed BFP with 678,328 votes, equivalent to 35.86 percent of the total votes.

The United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) got 15 seats after receiving 613,663 votes, or 32.44 percent.

BARMM Grand Coalition (BGC) was allocated eight seats after receiving 391,266 votes, or 20.68 percent.

Bangsamoro Peoples’ (Raayat) Democratic Party got one seat after receiving 68,839 votes, or 3.64 percent.

The other parties — Progresibong Bangsamoro Party, Bangsamoro Party, Bangsamoro Empowerment and Social Transformation Party, Mahardika Party, Alliance of Bangsamoro Tri-Peoples Party, and People’s Consultative (Mushawara) Party — were deemed not qualified.

The Progresibong Bangsamoro Party received 36,672 votes or 1.94 percent.

Bangsamoro Party received 35,777 votes, or 1.89 percent, while the BEST Party received 26,926 votes, or 1.42 percent.

Mahardika received 14,800 votes, or 0.78 percent; ABOT received 11,428 votes, or 0.60 percent; and Mushawara received 8,054 votes, or 0.43 percent.

The poll body said voter turnout was 84.34 percent.

Meanwhile, election watchdog Lente called for tighter safeguards against voter interference, greater election transparency and stronger independence for the Comelec.

Based on the findings of its 313 grassroots monitors, 10 supervising lawyers and area coordinators deployed in 209 voting centers, Lente said reforms are needed to strengthen public confidence in future elections.

Among its immediate proposals are stricter rules on voter assistors, particularly to prevent watchers from assisting voters; pilot use of CCTV cameras in voting centers where there are indicators of controlled voting and a lower voter-to-automated counting machine ratio nationwide beginning with the 2028 national and local elections.

Lente said its monitors found that about one in four monitoring reports recorded cases where voters did not personally feed their ballots into the ACM, most often because an Electoral Board member did so.

About one-third of reports also recorded some form of voter assistance, with a watcher providing assistance in roughly one in five of those cases — despite watchers being barred from serving as assistors.
