Bharat Forge Limited (BFL), through its Aerospace business, announced today that it has signed an MoU with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish India’s first private-sector marine gas turbine (MGT) repair, overhaul, and indigenous development complex in Visakhapatnam.
The facility will be spread across 80 acres within Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor. The company said the MoU was signed on May 15 by Guru Biswal, CEO – Aerospace, Bharat Forge Limited.
Co-located with the Naval Dockyard, INS Eksila, and Eastern Naval Command Headquarters, the Visakhapatnam facility will, for the first time, bring this critical propulsion sustainment capability into India’s private sector. In Phase 1, the project will deliver a full marine GT repair and overhaul complex. This will include hot-section restoration of blades, vanes, and combustion liners, component manufacturing, and a 72-hour turnaround capability for the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.
In Phase 2, the project will establish India’s first private-sector marine GT development and assembly hall, featuring a full-spectrum hot-test facility scalable across all propulsion ratings. For the first time on Indian soil, it will undertake the development and qualification of an indigenous marine GT.
The facility will also serve as a regional repair and overhaul hub for friendly navies.
“This is not just an investment. This is our pledge to the Indian Navy, and to the nation,” said Amit Kalyani, Vice-Chairman and Joint Managing Director, Bharat Forge Limited.
Gas turbines are the propulsion backbone of the Indian Navy’s frontline surface combatants. The overseas supply chain for these engines has been severely disrupted in recent years, directly impacting fleet repair and overhaul (R&O) cycles and operational readiness.
BFL, a Pune-based Indian multinational company, is a technology-driven global leader in providing high-performance, innovative, safety-critical components and solutions for several sectors, including automotive, power, oil and gas, construction and mining, rail, marine, defence, and aerospace.
BFL has a global manufacturing footprint with a presence across five countries. It has the largest repository of metallurgical knowledge and offers full-service supply capability to its geographically dispersed marquee customers, from concept to product design, engineering, manufacturing, testing, and validation.
