Bicam launches pro bono mediation initiative

Kota Kinabalu: The Borneo International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation (Bicam) launched its Pro Bono Mediation Initiative on Friday to improve access to professional dispute resolution services for individuals and small businesses.

Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who launched the initiative at Bicam Global ADR Horizons 2026, said access to justice should not depend on a person's financial capacity.

He said the initiative, developed in collaboration with the courts and supported by the legal and mediation community, would encourage earlier settlements, reduce unnecessary costs and help resolve suitable disputes amicably before they became more entrenched.

Masidi said mediation was a practical and forward-looking approach that preserved relationships while allowing solutions to reflect legal rights, commercial realities, community values and common sense.

He also reaffirmed the State Government's support for Bicam, saying an effective and independent dispute resolution institution strengthened investor confidence, promoted good governance and supported Sabah's long-term economic competitiveness.
