
Kota Kinabalu: A 25-year-old man was sentenced to 16 months’ jail on Thursday for trying to steal a roll of leather worth RM10,000 from his workplace last year.
Alsidi Amin pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to committing the offence at Penampang Cushion, Donggongon, Penampang at 11.45am on Nov 8, 2022.
Alsidi was charged under Section 381 of the Penal Code read with Section 511 of the same Code.
The prosecution informed the court that the owner of the shop lodged a police report on Nov 8, 2022, claiming that her worker stole a roll of leather valued at RM10,000 from the premises and that his act was recorded on CCTV.
Alsidi was arrested by police on March 23 this year.
When asked by the court about the whereabouts of the leather, Alsidi said he took the leather back to his rented house and sold it.
Unrepresented, Alsidi requested a fine.
The court ordered Alsidi to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.
In another case, a self-employed man was jailed 16 months for keeping stolen items.
Lau Wui Mun, 44, admitted before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to keeping a stolen welding kit and wood sander machines at 12.50pm on Dec 19, in a house at Kg Sarapung, Jalan Tambunan-Penampang, Penampang.
The charge, under Section 411 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to five years or a fine, or both, on conviction.
Lau’s case came up for trial on Thursday but he informed the court that he wish to change his plea to guilty to the charge.
The court heard from the prosecution that the tools were reported stolen from a house at Kg Tuavon, Penampang on Dec 17, last year.
Lau was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.
Meanwhile, a businessman from China was charged with forgery two years ago.
He Long, 34, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to forging a document – an authorised letter for company representative dealing with JPJ and directors’ Circular Resolution with an intention to cause one Tan Peng Fei to release a Range Rover Vogue SDVE Auto.
He allegedly committed the offence at 1.30pm on Sept 20, 2021 at the Road Transport Department in Penampang.
The charge is framed under Section 465 of the Penal Code.
The prosecution offered bail at RM5,000 in two sureties with a condition that the accused must report to the investigating officer once in two weeks and that his passport be impounded by the court.
Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence representing Le applied for a lower bail on the grounds that he cooperated well with the police throughout the investigation and that he has a valid passport.
Lim also submitted that the accused has no flight risk as he has a business here.
The court fixed May 3 for pre-trial case management and released Le on a bail of RM3,500 in two sureties and granted all the additional conditions applied by the prosecution.
