Bubble tea has always been a trend, not just in Malaysia like how we have famous brands like Tealive, Chagee & etc., but also in places where it rooted, including Taiwan. However, a trajedy happened recently which disgusted youngsters to the max, making a huge issue on social media where it went viral instantly.

According to See Hua News, a popular Taiwanese bubble tea chain branch located in Tainan was recently brought to social media by a customer who found a black, nail-like object in her drink. the customer shared that she purchased the drink and had already taken a few sips when she discovered what appeared to be a piece of clipped fingernail floating inside the cup. Feeling nauseous and alarmed, she immediately returned to the shop to raise the complaint.

The customer alleged that during the discussion, the shop owner repeatedly insisted that the preparation process was clean and that no foreign objects could have entered the drink through ice or ingredients. However, the situation escalated when the owner later admitted that she had cut her fingernails inside the store, which further fueled the customer’s suspicions about the source of the object.

The customer also claimed that the owner explained she had trimmed her nails in a corner of the shop, cleaned up afterward, and disposed of the clippings in a tea waste container, insisting it was impossible for anything to have entered the beverage. The explanation reportedly did little to ease the customer’s concerns, especially after what she described as contradictory statements during their conversation. Tensions rose further when the customer said the shop owner responded in frustration, telling her that “if you drank my fingernail, it must be fate,” a remark that quickly drew attention online after the incident was shared publicly.

The shop owner has since defended herself, stating that the timeline of events has been misrepresented. She claimed she trimmed her nails during a lunch break the previous week, while the customer purchased the drink the following Monday, a day when she was not on duty and did not prepare any beverages. She also pointed out that another staff member with nail extensions was working at the time. Regarding the controversial “fate” comment, the owner explained that she made the remark out of frustration after repeated questioning and insisted it was not meant to mock the customer.

The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users criticizing the idea of personal grooming activities such as nail trimming taking place in a food preparation environment. Others argued that regardless of whether the fingernail came from the owner or another employee, the situation reflects poorly on hygiene practices and customer confidence.

Following negotiations, the store initially offered six free drinks as compensation, which the customer declined. The case was eventually settled with a payment of NT$1,000 (approximately RM125). The parent company of the beverage brand has since issued a statement saying the matter is under internal investigation. It added that it will strengthen staff training and conduct a thorough review of in-store preparation procedures. The company also encouraged customers experiencing health concerns to retain evidence and report the matter to Taiwan’s health authorities for further clarification.
