The European Union has launched its entry-exit system (EES) which will affect UK citizens travelling to and from Europe.

The Independent’s travel correspondent Simon Calder explains that the EU’s plan is to ensure that “everything will become digital” by 9 April, 2026, as the bloc will be take fingerprints and facial biometrics of all travellers as they cross each country’s border.

Starting on 13 October and lasting for 180 days, travellers crossing in and out of the Schengen area must cross “double red tape” by providing both personal physical data and your passport when entering the zone.

The digital scheme aims to identify suspected criminals and to police the limit on stays of 90 days in any 180 days that applies to UK and other nationalities.
