Prime minister Anwar Ibrahim says a bill will cap the PM’s tenure at 10 years or two terms in Parliament this year

PETALING JAYA: The Prime Minister’s tenure will be capped at no more than 10 years or two terms under a Bill that will be tabled in Parliament this year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said said the law would ensure that everyone has a defined term limit.

“Because when a term is given, one is able to carry out their responsibilities within that period.

“After that, it is better for us to hand over leadership to the next generation.

“This also applies to the Prime Minister’s Department. Therefore, we will table a law to limit the term to no more than 10 years, or two full terms,” he told the nation during the 2026 New Year address during the Prime Minister’s Department monthly assembly in Putrajaya, today.
