The former prime minister says no evidence has been furnished a year after the claim was made. Dr Mahathir Mohamad sued Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim last year for RM150 million over claims he had enriched himself and his family members.
Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has spoken out against allegations made by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, stating that there's no solid proof to support claims of him amassing billions of ringgit. In a bold move, the former prime minister revealed that it's been a year since he took legal action against Anwar, yet no evidence has surfaced.
Frustrated by the lack of substantiation, Mahathir emphasized his innocence in a recent statement. He highlighted his defamation lawsuit against Anwar, seeking a hefty sum of RM150 million in damages for accusations of self-enrichment and racism aimed at him and his family.
Adding fuel to the fire, Mahathir has challenged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to present any evidence they might have against him. He expressed bewilderment over a notice received by his son, Mirzan, alleging Mahathir's involvement in an abuse of power under Section 23 of the MACC Act.
The plot thickens as Mahathir's sons, Mirzan and Mokhzani, were summoned by MACC to provide testimony regarding their father. Mokhzani even hinted that Mahathir himself was the primary target of the investigation.
Raising eyebrows, Mahathir questioned the persistence of a former Bank Negara assistant governor's statutory declaration implicating Anwar, despite MACC's exoneration of the opposition leader. The saga dates back to 1999 when Murad Khalid accused Anwar of holding RM3 billion across multiple bank accounts, a claim reiterated in 2012. Despite MACC's clearance, the SD remains untouched.
In a final jab, Mahathir queried whether Anwar's family underwent similar scrutiny regarding their finances, hinting at a double standard in the investigation.
With tensions mounting and accusations flying, the stage is set for a showdown between two political giants, leaving the nation on edge as the truth hangs in the balance.
