Farmers under the banner of BKU Doaba hold a protest outside the PWD office in Jalandhar.

The members of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Doaba held a protest outside the office of Public Works Department over the issue of bad condition of roads in almost all villages falling under Jalandhar Cantonment.

The protest was led by Sukhbir Singh of Kukkad village and president of the Jalandhar Cantonment block of BKU Doaba. The farmers blamed the administration for failing to repair or re-lay the roads in the villages, which have remained in a dilapidated condition for the past several months.

People from almost all the villages falling under Jalandhar Cantonment are troubled by the damaged roads. The farmers said that foundation stones for all the broken roads had already been laid by the AAP government, but the work on not even a single road had been completed, causing difficulties for children and elderly people while commuting. The union members said they had given the administration a 10-day ultimatum, but no work had been initiated, forcing the farmers to resort to protest.

Several political leaders from the area including Congress MLA Pargat Singh also participated in this protest. The congregation of Kukkad village also arranged cold water and langar. A memorandum was submitted to the department demanding the early start of the work and the officials assured that the road work around Kukkad village would be completed before May 31.
