Recently, an African-American tourist raised many eyebrows when she released a TikTok video alleging that Malaysia was one of “the most racist countries” she had ever been to.
Unsurprisingly, the clip garnered both support and criticism from netizens, prompting the tourist to release a separate video addressing the online reaction.
Called out purported “victim blaming”
In said TikTok video, the tourist explained that her intention was to address certain comments left on the previous clip, which she described as “wild”.
@ooeygooee Y'all really victim-blamed me under a video about racism 💀 #Malaysia #Travel #BigBackTravels ♬ original sound – OoeyGooee
She first began with comments from netizens who claimed to have never experienced racism in Malaysia, adding that she was genuinely happy for them.
However, her biggest gripe was with those who argued that since they had never experienced racism in Malaysia, the same should be true for her.
“That’s the same victim blaming people do when a woman says she’s been sexually assaulted: ‘Well, he never touched me so he couldn’t have touched you. Well, I’ve never heard of him doing that so he couldn’t have done that.’

“What the actual f*** is that? Your experience does NOT cancel out mine. That is not how any of this works!” she fumed.
Denied being rude
The tourist then went on to touch on comments that slammed her appearance, particularly her coloured hair, as well as those that accused her of being disrespectful to local cultures — which she strongly denied.
“I’m actually very calm and very reserved when I travel. I do respect the cultures of the places I go. I do dress appropriately and in general, I’m actually a pretty reserved person when I’m out and about. But you wouldn’t know this because you’re just making assumptions.”

She added that she believes those who left behind nasty comments about her hair “have no idea how dumb they sound.”
‘You just proved my point!’
The tourist finally addressed the last group of netizens, whom she described as those who “went straight racist” over the clip.
It’s insane! Under a video about racism! Y’all are literally proving my point!”
However, she did commend a handful of Malaysians who apologised and admitted that the country was indeed grappling with racism and colourism.

Towards the end of the clip, the tourist criticised the rampant victim blaming most would resort to when they cannot face the painful truth regarding certain flaws about their country.
“The victim blaming in society is absolutely insane. Y’all will make every excuse in the book on why it couldn’t have been racism and why it couldn’t have happened when it did. That’s defending racism. Period.
“Check your privilege, check your colourism and do better. I’ll see y’all abroad,” she quipped.
