The world of Blade Runner is returning with a new story set in a future where the balance of power between humans and artificial beings has been reversed. Titled Blade Runner 2099, the upcoming Prime Video series expands the cyberpunk universe established by Ridley Scott’s 1982 film and Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, taking viewers to Los Angeles in the year 2099.
Created by Silka Luisa, with Ridley Scott among its executive producers, the eight-episode limited series promises a new chapter in one of science fiction’s most influential franchises. Jonathan van Tulleken, known for directing episodes of Shōgun, directs and executive produces the first two episodes. The series is produced by Scott Free Productions, Alcon Television Group and Amazon MGM Studios. Its creative team has aimed to honour the visual world of the earlier films while introducing a distinct aesthetic for the new era.
Starring Michelle Yeoh as Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner approaching the end of her lifespan, and Hunter Schafer as Cora, a human who disguises herself as a Replicant, the series explores questions of identity, mortality, power and what it means to be human. Their partnership takes shape against the backdrop of a society controlled by Replicants, where the distinction between human and artificial life has become more complicated than ever.
When does the Prime Video series Blade Runner 2099 premiere?
Blade Runner 2099 premieres on 25 November 2026, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The limited series consists of eight episodes, all of which will be released simultaneously on the premiere date.
The series was originally announced as a project in development in 2021 and subsequently faced production delays. Filming eventually began in Prague, Czech Republic, in May 2024, after an earlier production plan was affected by the 2023 Hollywood strikes.
Following an extended post-production period, Prime Video confirmed the November 2026 release date. The series is produced by Scott Free Productions, Alcon Television Group and Amazon MGM Studios.
What is the series about?
Set in Los Angeles in 2099, Blade Runner 2099 takes place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. In this future, Replicants, bioengineered humanoids created by humans, have risen to power. The social order has been reversed, leaving humans in a disadvantaged position while Replicants exercise control over the city.
The story follows Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner who knows that her lifespan is nearing its end. Unlike the earlier films, which explored the uncertainty surrounding Replicant identity and humanity, the new series places a Replicant at the centre of its story.
Olwen becomes involved with Cora, a human who pretends to be a Replicant. Cora is on the run to protect her younger brother and goes undercover, creating another layer of deception in a society where appearances can be dangerously misleading.
The pair become entangled in a mystery involving Marek, a missing Replicant Blade Runner and one of Olwen’s colleagues. Their investigation unfolds against a wider conflict involving power, rebellion and the increasingly complicated relationship between humans and their artificial counterparts.
During the New York Comic Con panel in October 2026, creator Silka Luisa explained that Replicants in the series have agency and desires of their own, even though they were created in humanity’s image. The show also explores the things they still cannot experience, including ageing and pregnancy, and their attempts to obtain stolen human experiences through black markets.
By combining a missing-person mystery with a dystopian society, the show continues the franchise’s exploration of what separates humans from the beings they create.
Who is in the cast of Blade Runner 2099?
The series features:
Michelle Yeoh as Olwen: Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner approaching the end of her life. As someone who knows her time is running out, Olwen is determined not to leave important matters unresolved. Her character also offers a different perspective on the franchise’s central questions about Replicant identity. Rather than questioning whether she is human, Olwen must confront what her approaching mortality means for her and the choices she makes.
Hunter Schafer as Cora: Hunter Schafer stars as Cora, a human who poses as a Replicant. On the run to protect her younger brother, Cora goes undercover and becomes Olwen’s partner. Her deception is expected to complicate their relationship as the pair investigate the mystery surrounding Marek. Cora’s human identity also creates an important contrast with Olwen, whose existence is defined by the very artificial nature Cora is attempting to conceal.
The supporting cast includes:
Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby and Johnny Harris.
How does Blade Runner 2099 connect to the previous projects of the franchise?
The new sci-fi series moves the story forward by 50 years from the events of Blade Runner 2049. Its premise reverses the original power dynamic: Replicants now dominate Los Angeles, while humans find themselves in a subordinate position.
The decision to centre the story on Olwen, a Replicant who is aware of her own nature, also shifts the perspective of the franchise. Rather than focusing solely on humans trying to determine who is a Replicant, the series explores what happens when artificial beings hold power and continue to desire experiences beyond the limits imposed on them.
