This morning, two regions in Sabah registered unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) levels. As of 7 am, Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic and Kimanis reported API readings of 136 and 118, respectively, according to the Department of Environment Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) website.
A statement from the State Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre revealed that a fire erupted at the Kayu Madang landfill, situated approximately three kilometers from the Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic, yesterday. The incident prompted an emergency response from the Kota Kinabalu fire and rescue station following an alert received at 4:19 pm. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene, which is 28 kilometers away from the station.
Efforts to contain the fire are currently underway, with updates on the progress provided periodically. However, as of this morning, the fire remains active, emitting plumes of black smoke that are contributing to air pollution in the vicinity.
The occurrence of such fires in landfills can exacerbate air quality issues, posing health risks to nearby communities. The release of pollutants, including particulate matter and gases, can lead to respiratory problems and other health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
Authorities are likely to intensify efforts to mitigate the effects of the fire and manage air quality in affected areas. This may include deploying additional resources for firefighting operations, implementing measures to minimize smoke emissions, and issuing advisories to residents on precautions to safeguard their health.
Furthermore, addressing the root causes of landfill fires, such as improper waste management practices and inadequate fire prevention measures, is crucial to preventing similar incidents in the future. Long-term solutions may involve improving waste management infrastructure, promoting recycling and waste reduction initiatives, and enforcing regulations to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
In the meantime, residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible, especially those with respiratory issues, and to follow guidelines issued by health authorities to minimize exposure to polluted air. Monitoring of air quality conditions is essential, with updates from relevant agencies providing valuable information for public awareness and preparedness.
