The people of Selangor have been blessed in many ways – cash aid, medical aid, free water, free bus services, shopping vouchers and more. Recently there was news that starting January 2023, the elderly and the disabled will be further aided through the Selangor government initiatives - ‘Golden Age Friendly Scheme’ and the ‘Special People Friendly Scheme’. The shopping vouchers given to them will be increased from RM100 to RM150.

This is indeed a piece of welcome news, especially for the low-income group who are struggling to keep up with the rising costs of inflation. For many who are without much savings, even an additional RM50 is a great deal.

When I retired, I quickly purchased “My Rapid Warga Mas” card to enjoy a 50% discount when I travel on Rapid KL Bus, LRT or Monorail. It was a good time to explore the city and move around without getting into traffic jams. However, I managed to use my card only a few times before Covid hit our world. Now that the situation has improved, I believe I can put my card to good use again. Indeed, the city of Kuala Lumpur has gone through much change and this is a good chance to explore.

Whenever the government announced yearly increments in salary for civil servants, I rejoiced with those in our civil service. However, I also feel sad for the oldies who may not have much savings. Many of these oldies started off with very low salaries of RM200 to RM300 decades ago. Many retired civil servants are also surviving on low pensions. So, I wonder how far their savings or pensions could stretch given our rate of inflation.

So, I am really appreciative of what the Selangor government has been and is still doing for its citizens. Providing free water, shopping vouchers on birthdays or festive seasons and health checks regardless of race or creed shows that you understand and care for your people. Thank you so much!

To find out more regarding the benefits of being a citizen in Selangor, do head to your elected representatives’ offices to get the latest updates. I am sure, there is help for the needy.

May God continue to bless Malaysia with the wisdom and courage to always do the right thing.
