Oh, how the mighty have fallen! Once hailed as the great reformer who would cleanse Malaysia of corruption, now Anwar Ibrahim’s credibility is wobbling like a toddler learning to walk in heels.

Bloomberg—yes, the prestigious international news agency that we’ve all trusted with our stock market gains and breakfast-time business updates—has decided to tarnish the gleaming image of our beloved PMX by publishing what some are calling blatant lies. How dare they?

Of course, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied everything, telling us, in the same firm tone you might use to convince a toddler that the kankonh on their plate is in fact edible.

But is that enough? No, says our ever-persistent legal eagle Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, who insists that a denial from the MACC is about as convincing as a 'we’ll fix this pothole by next week' promise from our local authorities.

No, what’s needed here is a grand gesture: a defamation lawsuit! Nothing screams "I’m innocent!" like suing a multi-billion-dollar media organization, right?

But, hold on, let’s unpack this carefully. According to Bloomberg’s "informed sources" (because who doesn’t trust the omniscient "sources" who could very well be your chatty neighbor or the guy making teh tarik at your corner stall), Anwar allegedly instructed the MACC to give his former aide Farhash Wafa Salvador a pass on some pesky little issue involving a billion-ringgit immigration system.

That’s right, because nothing says "progressive leadership" like covering up for your former political secretary. And if that weren’t juicy enough, the article claims that Anwar directed MACC to dig up dirt on Daim and Dr. Mahathir Mohamad and his sons, just for good measure. Ah, the old "I’ll investigate your family if you look the other way for mine" routine—a classic!

But fear not, dear Malaysians, because PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari has thrown down the gauntlet, challenging Anwar to sue Bloomberg.

“Sue them,” he says. Why? Because nothing reassures the public more about your innocence than embroiling yourself in a drawn-out legal battle with a media giant.

After all, we all have fond memories of politicians triumphantly emerging from defamation lawsuits with their reputations untarnished and stronger than ever, right? Oh wait... that’s not how it usually works. Ever.

But let’s be real here. Even if Anwar did sue Bloomberg and win, what’s the end game? Would that restore his image in the eyes of the people? Would Malaysians suddenly break out in applause, declaring, “Thank you, Anwar, for proving the nation’s integrity by suing the people who dared report on you?”

Or will the rakyat continue rolling their eyes, seeing this for what it likely is—a desperate attempt to silence dissent?

What’s most amusing here is the sheer melodrama of it all. On one side, you have Bloomberg playing the role of the international villain, a shadowy news network conspiring to take down Malaysia’s brightest star.

On the other, you have Anwar, painted by his supporters as the victim of a malicious smear campaign. And in the middle are the rest of us, wondering whether any of this political theatre will actually improve the price of eggs or fix our water supply.

So, what’s a PM to do? Should Anwar take up Fadhli’s challenge, file a lawsuit, and subject the world to months of courtroom drama?

Or should he stick with the MACC’s denial and hope that the public’s short attention span kicks in before the next election? One thing is clear: the credibility erosion has already begun, and no lawsuit is going to stop that.

In the meantime, let’s all grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.
