Blue moon 2026: How and when to see it in UK skies this week

  • A blue moon is set to appear on 31 May in the UK, the first of its kind since August 2024.
  • By definition, a blue moon refers not to its colour but to either the second full moon in a calendar month, or the third of four full moons that are seen in one season.
  • According to Royal Observatory Greenwich, blue moons only take place every two or three years, although two occurred in 2018 alone.
  • This month’s blue moon is believed to take place at 9:45am, the Observatory has said.
  • The next blue moon is scheduled to take place on 20 May 2027.
