Kuala Lumpur: Barisan Nasional (BN) will honour its commitment to remain in the unity government until the dissolution of the 15th Parliament, says its chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic), The New Straits Times reported.
Speaking at the 18th Annual General Assembly of Parti Makkal Sakti Malaysia at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, Zahid said BN would sever ties with the administration the moment Parliament is dissolved.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president said the pact reflects a pledge made to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong during the formation of the unity government following the 15th general election (GE15).
Zahid added that cooperating in the federal administration does not mean BN has surrendered its political identity or principles, pointing to Johor as an example where political arrangements differ from the federal level.
However, Makkal Sakti president Datuk Seri R.S. Thanenthiran urged BN to exit the unity government as soon as possible, claiming the coalition and its leaders have faced sustained pressure.
Thanenthiran said his party will submit a resolution passed at its general assembly to the highest BN leadership for formal discussion.
He alleged that BN and Umno leaders have been disproportionately subjected to investigations and arrests compared to other political figures, warning that remaining in the government risks tarnishing the coalition's standing.
