Datuk Seri Zahid is absolutely right. Barisan Nasional must prepare itself to face the flood of misinformation that will dominate the coming Johor Election campaign. Politics today is no longer just about ceramahs, banners or party machinery on the ground. The real battlefield is now social media.
The methods used to spread lies have also evolved. Today, misinformation comes through edited videos, fake posters, manipulated speeches and anonymous social media accounts pretending to spread “truth”. These attacks are carefully designed to destroy confidence in BN and create confusion among voters.
The opposition understands one thing very clearly. Perception spreads faster than facts. A short misleading video can reach hundreds of thousands of people within hours. By the time the truth comes out, the damage is often already done.
That is why the BN chairman's reminder to the BN machinery is important. BN cannot afford to react slowly anymore. In modern politics, silence is dangerous. If fake accusations are left unanswered, many voters will assume they are true.
BN’s machinery must therefore become faster and more organised in countering false narratives. Every fake claim must be answered immediately with facts, data and professionalism. Emotional reactions alone are not enough. The response must be calm, factual and convincing.
Datuk Seri Zahid is also correct in saying that social media is now the coalition’s new battleground. Winning online perception has become just as important as winning support on the ground. Political parties that fail to adapt to this reality will eventually fall behind.
At the same time, BN is receiving encouraging signs from young people. Datuk Seri Zahid revealed that about 82% of new membership applications received are from youths. This is a strong signal that younger Malaysians are beginning to regain confidence in Umno and Barisan Nasional.
The return of former Umno members and supporters is also another positive development. They can help strengthen BN’s campaign machinery ahead of the Johor Election.
Johor will become an important test before larger political battles arrive. BN already proved its strength during the 2022 Johor Election. However, future victories will depend on the coalition's preparedness to fight and defeat misinformation quickly, effectively and consistently.
