Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, made an announcement today regarding the upcoming by-election in Kuala Kubu Baru, necessitated by the unfortunate passing of its DAP incumbent. Zahid stated that instead of fielding their own candidate, BN will throw its support behind the candidate nominated by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.

Acknowledging the vacancy in the Kuala Kubu Baru seat within the Selangor State Legislative Assembly due to the demise of its representative, Zahid emphasized the importance of respecting the coalition dynamics. Despite a notable increase in the Malay voter population in Kuala Kubu Baru, Zahid underscored the need to honor the coalition agreements.

Zahid stated, "In order to respect the Madani government, I think we should respect the component party seats." He assured that regardless of the candidate chosen, the machinery of Umno, especially from Selangor, along with support from BN and MCA, will rally behind Umno to assist the chosen candidate.

The three-term assemblyman, Lee Kee Hiong, representing Kuala Kubu Baru for DAP, passed away at 58 years old. His death, reportedly due to cancer, was confirmed by Port Klang Authority chairman Ean Yong Hian Wah.

The political landscape saw a significant shift after the 15th general election (GE15) in 2022, resulting in a hung parliament. In response, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's PH, despite securing the most seats but falling short of a simple majority, orchestrated a coalition comprising former adversaries, BN and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), to establish the national unity government.

This strategic partnership exemplifies the evolving political dynamics aimed at fostering unity and cooperation beyond traditional party lines. As Kuala Kubu Baru gears up for the upcoming by-election, the decision of BN to support PH's nominee signals a collaborative approach towards governance and representation, reflecting a broader commitment to national interests above partisan divides.
