PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has called out Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates for not declaring their assets ahead of the general election (GE15).
The PKR president said that candidates from BN and PN have clearly shown they are not ready for transparency.
“This proves they are afraid and dare not disclose to the people the assets they accumulated while holding high positions in the government,” he said in a Facebook post.
Most of PKR’s 72 candidates have declared their assets, with deputy president Rafizi Ramli the first to do so. PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, declared their assets on Wednesday.
Anti-graft activists have called for GE15 candidates to follow the example of their PKR counterparts and declare their assets.
Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman declared his assets, worth about RM1.9 million, on Thursday.
Meanwhile, DAP’s secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said his party does not have any plans to make it mandatory for its candidates to declare their assets prior to polling day on Nov 19.
He said only those who are elected would be required to make asset declarations, adding that this was what DAP had practiced in previous elections too.
Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang slammed PKR’s mandatory asset declaration for its GE15 candidates, calling it “stupid”.
“Asset declaration is sometimes a form of stupidity. They want to show off,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.
Hadi’s comments come as PAS vice-president Amar Nik Abdullah yesterday said the party’s leaders were “embarrassed” to make asset declarations as they are not wealthy like “some candidates who are millionaires”.
