BN rallies behind Onn Hafiz as Johor poll standard-bearer amid upcoming polls

BARISAN Nasional (BN) has signalled that continuity, stability and the performance of Johor’s current administration will form the cornerstone of its campaign strategy after formally backing Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi as the coalition’s public face for the forthcoming state election.

The endorsement by BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 16th Johor state election following the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly.

Presenting Onn Hafiz as the coalition’s preferred symbol of leadership and governance, Ahmad Zahid said BN intended to maintain the existing political formula that has guided the state administration.

“God willing, with the consent of His Majesty (the Sultan of Johor), we will retain the existing ‘poster boy’, namely the Johor Menteri Besar (Onn Hafiz),” he said after officiating the closing ceremony of the Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Economic Convention.

He added that BN would remain consistent in choosing candidates capable of ensuring policy continuity and sustaining the state government's administrative agenda.

The announcement is expected to strengthen Onn Hafiz’s position as the coalition’s leading figure heading into what is likely to be one of the most closely watched state elections in Malaysia.

At the same time, BN leaders sought to contain growing speculation over the party’s electoral line-up after a purported list of candidates contesting all 56 state seats circulated widely on social media.

Johor BN secretary Datuk Abdul Halim Suleiman categorically rejected the document, describing it as a fabricated list created to mislead party members and generate unnecessary conjecture.

According to Abdul Halim, discussions on candidate placements are still underway and no final decision has been reached by the coalition’s highest decision-making bodies.

“I am asking all parties, especially BN members and supporters, not to be influenced by the list that has gone viral.

“It is purely a fabrication. Our focus now is on strengthening the machinery at the grassroots level,” he said.

He further stressed that any announcement on BN’s candidates would be made exclusively through official party channels once the selection process had been completed.

The controversy emerged after the viral list purportedly named BN candidates for every constituency, including Machap assemblyman Onn Hafiz, fuelling speculation over the coalition’s electoral strategy.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid dismissed suggestions that the dissolution of the Johor assembly reflected tensions between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH), insisting that the state's political arrangement remains distinct from the federal coalition framework.

“Johor’s state government is a Barisan Nasional government, not a Unity Government. It was formed before the existence of the Unity Government at the national level,” he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister also reiterated that the final candidate slate would only be confirmed after consultations with leaders of BN’s component parties.

With BN expected to contest all 56 seats, the election is shaping up as a significant test of the coalition’s ability to defend one of its traditional strongholds while projecting confidence in the leadership of the current Menteri Besar. - June 3, 2026
