PERAK Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad has clarified that Barisan Nasional (BN) selected its candidate for the Ayer Kuning state by-election based on the individual’s capability and qualifications, dismissing age as a determining factor.
Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, 54, a senior academic and Islamic studies expert, was officially named as BN’s candidate for the by-election, which is scheduled for polling on 26 April.
Speaking to the media after officiating a parenting seminar for Orang Asli families at Sekolah Menengah Sains Tapah, Saarani emphasised that age should not overshadow a candidate’s ability to serve effectively.
“Voters are free to choose the best representative. It doesn’t matter whether they are young or old – what matters is that they are capable, qualified, and accepted by the people,” he said.
“The definition of ‘young’ is highly subjective. Some say it’s under 40, others say under 50, and some even think it’s under 60. It’s all down to perception. But for me, age is not the issue. What’s important is that we present a candidate whom we believe can serve the people effectively as their elected representative,” Saarani said.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that Dr Mohamad Yusri recently resigned from his post as Head of the Islamic and Moral Education Department at the Ipoh Campus of the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) to contest the by-election.
Saarani confirmed that the resignation was submitted earlier this week and that the candidate is now awaiting formal release from the Public Service Department (JPA).
“He has already resigned and is currently waiting for his official release letter from JPA,” Saarani told reporters.
He reiterated that Yusri’s candidacy was based on his proven ability and leadership qualities. “We are hopeful that voters in Ayer Kuning will make a rational choice and support the BN candidate who represents the government. I believe the people of Ayer Kuning are wise enough to select someone who truly has their best interests at heart.”
The by-election, triggered by the sudden passing of incumbent assemblyman Ishsam Shahruddin on February 25, will see a three-way contest between BN, Perikatan Nasional (PN), and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).
PN has nominated 44-year-old Abdul Muhaimin Malek, the coalition’s Tapah Division Chair, while PSM is fielding its Deputy Secretary-General Bawani KS, 40, who also contested the seat in the last general election.
The Election Commission (EC) has set 12 April as nomination day, with early voting scheduled for 22 April, and polling day set for 26 April.
Dr Mohamad Yusri, who also serves as the Secretary of UMNO Tapah, holds a PhD in Islamic Studies and is a well-respected figure in education circles. His candidacy signals BN’s focus on experience and professionalism in public service.
With the campaign heating up, voters in Ayer Kuning are expected to weigh experience, credibility, and the ability to deliver – rather than age – in their decision at the ballot box. – April 10, 2025
