The Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Mustapha Sakmud recently said that it would be difficult for the government to cancel PTPTN debts due to such a large financial commitment.

UMNO Youth Chief, Dr. Akmal Saleh responded via a Facebook post and said that when Barisan Nasional (BN) was the government, they had made it clear that it was nearly impossible to abolish the PTPTN debts.

“But you guys wouldn’t believe it. In fact, the previous government, including Najib Razak were insulted.”

Mustapha said the government needs to take into account the commitment of borrowers who have previously paid off an estimated RM76 billion in loan debt. He also explained that he was aware that the PTPTN debt issue was part of the manifesto of both the government and the opposition in the last general election.

“It’s just that in the current situation, it is quite difficult for us to cancel the PTPTN debt with such a large commitment from the government.”

Dr. Akmal, on the other hand, shared some insights on how the Unity government can approach the PTPTN debts, which were already suggested when BN was the government.

Free PTPTN for some of the loaners

The UMNO Youth Chief suggested the government waive PTPTN loan repayments for students who achieve good academic results.

“The fee, or the debts can be reduced for the students who come from a poor family. Perhaps, these suggestions can be continued,” Akmal explained.

What do you think of Akmal’s take on the PTPTN loans?
