Bob Harris shares positive cancer news after undergoing treatment: ‘Never lose the faith folks!’

BBC Radio 2 presenter Bob Harris has told fans his cancer treatment is “getting back under control”.

The veteran broadcaster, 80, said he was “thrilled” to share the positive news, as he captioned the video update: “Never lose the faith folks!”

“Hey folks, it’s Bob here, and you know I said I’ve got some news… I’m so thrilled to be able to bring you this news,” Harris, who was first diagnosed with prostate cancer 19 years ago, began in the clip.

“I was speaking this morning with my oncologist… and we are going to continue with my cancer treatment, we’re getting back under control.”

He continued: “We were a little bit worried a short time ago, but everything is getting back under control now, and I can see the pathway of my life ahead of me, opening up again.”

Harris said it was “fantastic news” that he had wanted to relay to his followers.

“I’m gonna go into the weekend now and celebrate,” he added.

Harris was flooded with comments from friends and fans telling him they were chuffed on his behalf.

“The best news. Well done champ,” TV and radio presenter Dermot O’Leary said, while comedian Sarah Millican called it “wonderful news”.

Harris’s fellow BBC Radio DJ Trevor Nelson, who recently made an emotional return to the airwaves following brain tumour surgery, wrote: “Really happy for you Bob.”

His good news comes after the announcement in June that ill health was forcing him to step down from hosting his Radio 2 shows, Radio 2 Country and Sounds of the 70s, after a broadcasting career of almost 60 years.

The decision was made following the news in April that Harris’s cancer had spread to his spine.

Earlier this month, he embarked on an intensive course of intravenous therapy designed to “keep things at bay”, after his cancer took “more of a hold”.

“I still feel well but I am now at the start of an intensive course of intravenous radiotherapy which we are confident will keep things at bay. I should know the outcome quite soon.

“It’s a very emotional roller coaster. But, as you know, I’m an extremely positive person, and I continue to be determined to continue to get the best out of every day.”

Offering encouragement to others facing personal struggles, he added: “My message to you if you too are going through a difficult time is this: NEVER GIVE IN. Fight with all your might to keep going.”

He expressed gratitude to well-wishers, saying “your kind words mean more than you will ever know, and always remember…live every day the best you can and just keep going. You can do this.”

Following his latest update, Harris later posted a touching photo with his sons, Dylan and Ben, on a “boys’ weekend” in Oxfordshire.
