Body found after huge volcanic eruption in Indonesia

  • An Indonesian woman's body was recovered on Saturday following Friday's volcanic eruption at Mount Dukono on Indonesia's remote Halmahera island, as search operations continue for two missing Singaporean climbers.
  • The deceased woman, identified as Enjel, was found approximately 50 metres from the main crater rim, after she and 19 other hikers ascended the 1,355-metre volcano despite existing safety restrictions.
  • Seventeen climbers were safely evacuated hours after the eruption, which spewed ash 10 kilometres into the air, with ten of them sustaining minor burn injuries.
  • Rescue efforts, involving over 100 personnel and drones, are challenged by hazardous terrain and ongoing volcanic activity, with multiple eruptions and ash columns up to 3,000 metres observed since Saturday morning.
  • Mount Dukono has been on the second-highest alert level since 2008, with a 4-kilometre exclusion zone enforced since December 2024, and all hiking routes formally closed in April, with authorities warning of legal sanctions for non-compliance.
