Body of drowned Chinese tourist found in Langkawi waters

The body of a Chinese tourist feared drowned while swimming at a Langkawi beach has been recovered after an overnight search operation.

ALOR SETAR: The body of a Chinese national who went missing while swimming in Langkawi has been found. Langkawi police chief ACP Khairul Azhar Nuruddin confirmed the recovery this morning.

The body of Mingfei Lan, 48, from Shanghai, was discovered by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) at about 9.45 am.

The victim was holidaying with his wife and son at Tanjung Rhu Beach. He had gone alone to swim near Pulau Cabang at about 5.30 pm yesterday.

His son raised the alarm at around 6 pm when his father failed to resurface. The hotel management was alerted, prompting a search operation by the Langkawi Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) beginning at 9 pm.

The search resumed this morning and located the victim face down in the water. He was found approximately 50 metres from where he was last seen before disappearing.

The body has been sent to Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi for a post-mortem. Police have classified the case as sudden death.
