The child had been reported missing after she was believed to have fallen into a drain in Bandar Mahkota Cheras on Friday before being swept away by strong currents.

“The victim was discovered at 12.17pm along Sungai Langat, about 11km from the location where she was reported to have fallen near Sri Hijau Condominium.

“The body was found by the Fire and Rescue Department's Water Rescue Team (PPDA), who conducted a search by boat along the river,” authorities said.

Her parents later identified the body at the scene.

The remains were subsequently transported to the forensic unit at Kajang Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The search operation, led by the Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia, involved extensive river sweeps over several kilometres as rescuers traced the flow of the current.

The incident is believed to have occurred when the child attempted to retrieve a ball before falling into a drain, prompting an emergency response after authorities received a distress call at 7.08pm on the same day. - May 3, 2026
