Bogus cops strike again, Sarawak businessman loses RM635,000

MIRI – A businessman in southern Sarawak’s Serian district has lodged a police report claiming that a policeman had frightened him into parting with RM 635,000 of his life savings.

Sarawak police deputy commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the businessman lodged the report yesterday.

The businessman said that he got a call from a man on July 17 who claimed to be a policeman from Perak.

He was told that his bank accounts were being used for criminal activities and that police had an arrest warrant against him.

The businessman said the “policeman” told him his bank accounts are subjects of investigations.

Then on July 21, another “policeman” called and said he needed to open new bank accounts and transfer his savings there.

The businessman said he did what was told out of fear and later transferred RM635,000 via 35 transactions to six different bank accounts.

He rushed to police yesterday upon realising he had been scammed, said Mancha.

Mancha reminded the public not to be so easily frightened by people claiming to be police officers and not to transfer big sums of money without clarifying with police. – The Vibes, July 28, 2023
