A fraudulent scheme has left a 45-year-old woman devastated after she was duped out of RM168,400 by an imposter posing as a health ministry official. The incident unfolded when the victim, employed as a government agency officer residing in Taman Tawas Gemilang, received an unexpected call from an unidentified individual on January 5th.
Identifying himself as a representative from the ministry's pharmacy division, the scammer alleged that the victim had obtained various controlled medications from the Penang Hospital. Despite the woman's denial, the call was swiftly redirected to a purported 'police officer' claiming to be stationed at the Penang police headquarters. Shockingly, the victim was informed of her alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking and money laundering activities.
To exacerbate her distress, another individual claiming to be from the Bukit Aman police headquarters was brought into the conversation, instructing the victim to comply with all directives provided. Feeling coerced and fearful, the victim obediently submitted a copy of her identification card (MyKad) as requested.
Further heightening the ruse, the perpetrator dispatched a document titled "Polis Diraja Malaysia," purportedly detailing the victim's personal information and implicating her in drug trafficking and money laundering offences, accompanied by an arrest warrant issued in her name. Believing the elaborate deception, the victim proceeded to withdraw her savings amounting to RM168,400 and distributed it across five separate bank accounts as instructed.
Only upon completing these transactions did the victim realize the extent of the deception perpetrated against her. Subsequently, on February 9th, she reported the incident to the authorities. Ipoh district police chief ACP Yahaya Hassan confirmed the lodging of the complaint and disclosed that investigations are underway pursuant to Section 420 of the Penal Code.
This distressing episode underscores the importance of vigilance and scepticism when receiving unsolicited communications, particularly those purporting to be from authoritative sources. Individuals are urged to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of such claims through official channels to mitigate the risk of falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
