Mass shooting deaths in Australia are extremely rare

10:48 , Tara Cobham

Mass shooting deaths in Australia are extremely rare.

A 1996 massacre in the Tasmanian town of Port Arthur, where a lone gunman killed 35 people, prompted the government to drastically tighten gun laws and made it much more difficult for Australians to acquire firearms.

Significant mass shootings this century included two murder-suicides with death tolls of five people in 2014, and seven in 2018, in which gunmen killed their own families and themselves.

In 2022, two police officers were shot and killed by Christian extremists at a rural property in Queensland state. The three shooters in that incident, conspiracy theorists who hated the police, were also shot and killed by officers after a six-hour siege in the region of Wieambilla, along with one of their neighbors.

'We started hearing "pop pop"': Bondi resident tells of horror at the beach

09:45 , Holly Evans

Owain, a Bondi resident, had been walking along the beach with his girlfriend after a last-minute decision to have a dip in the sea.

“We were walking along the sea, just opposite the Pavilion. We started hearing ‘pop pop’ and it sounded like it was becoming behind the Pavillion and after three or four pops, I thought this isn’t a car backfiring, this has to be something more sinister.

“People started running then and so we ran to the end of the beach and grabbed our bags and we just made our way back to the flat.

“While we were running back the police response was amazing, they came really quickly. We were running in the sand and it’s really open, it wasn’t pleasant.”

Given that it had been a warm summer’s day, the beach had been busy with several people waiting to watch the sunset.

“Once we were off the beach, we stood off the main road and could see people on the beach and we didn’t know where the gunman was, could hear shots going on, and saw another wave of people running,

“It’s something you never expect, especially in Bondi. We’re a bit in shock, you never think you’re going to be in a scenario like this. You’ve got to think, get your things and try and be as safe as you can

“It was quite busy, it was a lovely evening, a lovely sunset. I’d been out all day and got the bus back and thought it would be nice to go down the beach and have a dip

“When you’re in a situation like that, you just need to get out of there now. We were about 200 metres from where they were shooting it seems, but we had the Pavilion between us but we didn’t know if they were moving around. You never expect it.

“All we can do is be grateful that everyone is okay.”

Home secretary Shabana Mahmood reacts to Australia shootings

09:34 , David Maddox

Shabana Mahmood said she would speak with her Australian counterpart later on Sunday about the incident on Bondi Beach.

Reacting to the reports from Australia, she told the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg show: “It's very, very early days. I can fully understand the anxiety this might be causing people here at home about relatives over in Australia, but first and foremost, our thoughts must be with the victims of this attack in Australia and with the Australian people as well.

“We will obviously watch closely as details emerge of what exactly has happened, and I'll be talking to my Australian counterpart later on today.”

Asked about whether she could confirm details of any fatalities, the home secretary responded: “I'm afraid I don't have confirmation of any of those details. I can fully understand the anxiety that some of what we're hearing in the early picture of its emerging will cause both here at home, but also, of course, in Australia primarily. But we will, of course, as soon as we know the facts from the ground, the government will respond.”

She added: “Once we've got confirmed facts, then we will be able to act accordingly. We will obviously make information available through the usual channels on the government website, as soon as we know more of what has happened. But I think it's important, as the facts are being established, that we just wait for that before we work out what to do next.”
