Bondi Beach victim’s daughter tells of rise in antisemitism at hearing

  • Sheina Gutnick, daughter of Bondi Beach attack victim Reuven Morrison, testified before Australia's royal commission on antisemitism, detailing a rise in hateful comments and feeling unsafe since the shooting.
  • Ms Gutnick reported receiving online comments suggesting she “should've been killed” and noted a significant increase in antisemitism since October 2023 following Israel's war on Gaza, feeling it has become socially acceptable.
  • The royal commission, led by retired judge Virginia Bell, began public hearings to investigate the nature and prevalence of antisemitism in Australia, linking a sharp spike to events in the Middle East.
  • Holocaust survivor Peter Halasz OAM also gave evidence, expressing fear about wearing his Star of David and drawing parallels between current antisemitism and historical events.
  • An interim report from the inquiry recommended increased security for Jewish public events, along with further counter-terrorism and gun reforms, with the final report due on 14 December.
