PAPAR: A Permanent Evacuation Centre (PPK) will be built in Bongawan this year to provide long-term relief for flood victims in Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced.
He said the location of the centre would be finalised with the State Secretary and District Officer, following his visit to seven Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) in the West Coast.
“Bongawan is one of the areas frequently affected by floods, so the need for a Permanent Evacuation Centre is very important,” he said.
The PPK will be equipped with toilets, bathrooms and cooking areas, while food preparation will be coordinated by Social Welfare Department volunteers.
Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, added that the centre would serve as a community hub during non-flood seasons, benefiting local residents.
He said this after visiting a community centre in Kg Mook, Kinarut, where he also paid respects to the family of landslide victim Jude Joseph.
