Kota Kinabalu: Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Jafry Ariffin hailed the book “The Hairy Rhinoceros” “a landmark in publications on Malaysian wildlife species” during the launch at Le Meridien Thursday.
Mourning the loss of Malaysia’s in particular Sabah’s flagship rhino to extinction and lessons learnt dominated the speeches at the event.
On why did this rhino species go extinct in Malaysia, author Datuk Datuk Dr John Payne said : “The extinction has little to do with habitat loss or poaching. All the habitat loss and hunting that affected this species in any significant way already happened a century ago, 1922,”.
