The appointment of Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali as the first director-general of the Malaysia Checkpoints and Border Agency (MCBA) marks a significant milestone in the nation's efforts to fortify its border security. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, in making this announcement, underscored Hazani's distinguished 37-year career in national security, law enforcement, and control. Notably, Hazani played a key role in establishing the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) in Lahad Datu, showcasing his leadership capabilities.

Saifuddin emphasized the urgent need for Hazani to accelerate the drafting of the MCBA Bill, signaling the government's commitment to formalizing MCBA as an independent entity. This legislative step is crucial in providing a clear framework for MCBA's operations, defining its scope, functions, and responsibilities.

MCBA, a central component of the nation's defense strategy, has been envisioned to streamline operations at 141 entry points by unifying over 20 enforcement agencies. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's vision, unveiled during Budget 2024, seeks to enhance national defense and security preparedness through the establishment of a single national border agency.

The objectives of MCBA extend beyond mere consolidation, focusing on tangible improvements in service efficiency at entry points. The agency aims to address issues such as revenue loss and enhance integrity in law enforcement during inspections across various domains, including people, goods, vehicles, animals, and plants.

As the March Parliament session approaches, anticipation surrounds the tabling of the MCBA Bill, which will lay the groundwork for the agency's effective functioning. The bill is expected to address the complexities of integrating diverse enforcement agencies, such as the Malaysian Immigration Department, the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department, and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

In this transformative phase, Hazani Ghazali's leadership as the inaugural director-general assumes paramount importance. His wealth of experience positions him as a key figure in shaping the trajectory of MCBA, ensuring that it becomes a formidable force in safeguarding the nation's borders and upholding security standards.
